Though this impressive piece of art from Toronto’s multi-talented singer-songwriter Julie Fader is a debut, this gal is no newbie when it comes to the Canadian musical landscape. A sought after player for everyone from Sarah Harmer to Great Lake Swimmers to Chad VanGaalen, Fader has wisely paid her dues for years, which only makes this unveiling all the more enticing. In return for her graciousness, Fader’s friends lend a hand here with Harmer’s and VanGaalen’s guest vocals, as well as Holy F*ck’s Graham Walsh in the producer seat. As a result, Outside In is a gorgeous, dream-like soundscape of acoustic ballads and honest, simplistic numbers that are guided by splashes of violins, flutes and Wurlitzer that will melt your heart. Fader is truly a national treasure.
Recommended if you dig…Sarah Harmer or Aimee Mann.
“Back on Step. 3 I told you about Julie Fader’s new album. I told you that I don’t really do reviews – but that rather than take my word for the awesomeness of this album that “Sarah Harmer, Holy Fuck, the Great Lake Swimmers, Cuff the Duke, Bob Wiseman, Ron Sexsmith, Justin Rutledge, Matt Barber, Jill Barber, Dan Mangan, By Divine Right, A Northern Chorus, Chad Van Gaalen, Attack in Black, Hey Rosetta!, Apostle of Hustle and others will be in line to buy the album so, if the respect of other musicians, a whole lot of other musicians, means anything to you Outside In is an album that should be firmly on your radar.” If you weren’t convinced and wanted to wait for the word to come in from the people that do reviews the results are rolling in in a way that rarely happens for a first album in it’s first month.” ~ Justin Beach
“At a show in Toronto (more like a gala, really) on Monday night, a lot of talk centered on a certain young woman who was playing with two different acts on the 10-artist bill: Julie Fader is a musician’s musician, a multi-instrumentalist whose skills go beyond mere interpretation of others music to making her own. As a member of both Great Lake Swimmers and appearing with Chad VanGaalen on his soft Airplane LP, she’s had a pretty hectic and busy year. Before that, Fader featured prominently with Sarah Harmer’s band, so she’s clearly no slouch when it comes to the Canadian indie music scene.
Outside In is the kind of album you swear you’ve heard somewhere else before. Like a city that’s instantly familiar even though you have never visited it before, Outside In induces déjà vu-like in the listener as they travel down musical routes that remind you of roads previously taken, like how “Skin and Bones” reminds me of Julie Doiron. But, where Julie F. and Julie D. differ is the path they choose to take: where Doiron’s songs are rickety, threadbare arrangements, Fader layers her songs like warm pullovers over plaid flannel shirts. With each new addition, the songs seem to radiate warmth and beg you to curl up with them and snuggle. I don’t want to say she’s got a slicker sound, but it certainly sounds like production wasn’t just an afterthought on Outside In.” ~ J. Di Gioia
“In much the same way Afie Jurvanen stepped out from behind the shadows to record a fantastic record, Julie Fader and her angelic voice has moved from supporting role to center stage with her new record, Outside In. Even if you don’t know it, you know Julie. She’s part of the Great Lake Swimmers. She sings with Chad VanGaalen. She plays with Sarah Harmer. She’s helped out Attack in Black. Basically, her unique talents – a voice as pure as fresh snow, top notch flute and Wurlitzer skills and a penchant for the melodica – keep this young artist in high demand, and she’s yet to disappoint.” ~ Herohill
